Back to School and Giving Back

Back to School is always a busy time. The supply lists, new clothes, getting the perfect backpack. Back to School is also a great time to give back. According to www.census.gov, over 20% of Arizona's children live below the poverty line. Luckily, there are several places, and ways to give back.

Southwest Human Development has been serving Arizona children since 1981, and Charity Navigator gives them a 100/100. This means their financial accountability and service to the community are exactly what their mission states. They have a convenient online program where you can purchase anything from a backpack full of supplies to clothing, shoes, computers, and printers. Everything a child needs for school.
Arizona Helping Hands has been serving foster children in our community since 1999, and also has a rating of 100/100 on Charity Navigator. On their website, you can donate fully stocked backpacks beginning at $35. Foster children are often at a disadvantage in a school setting due to lack of supplies. They also tend to change schools often. Sending a child to school with everything they need in a brand-new backpack can give them the confidence to have a great learning experience.
The Salvation Army has a program called Backpack S.O.S. Donations in any amount are helpful and greatly appreciated, and you can sponsor a child for just $50.
Another great opportunity to give back is to call your local school district and give money to school lunch accounts. Some children do not qualify for free lunch, but the accounts can get behind. Paying off balances and adding a bit extra can really help families and is a great way to give back anonymously.

As a community, we can make sure every child starts school on the right foot.
